The first ABRSM music exams took place soon after the new Music Block was built at DCGS. Students from all years at DCGS and DCHS were welcomed into the new building, given time and space to warm up, examined in a wide range of instruments from grades 1 to 8, and sent on their way with a biscuit. The initiative was hailed a great success by instrumental teachers, parents and students alike and we have continued to welcome ABRSM candidates to DCGS ever since.

Previously, students have had to take their exams at external exam centres, missing lessons and requiring parents and carers to take time out of the working day. The new music block is ideally equipped to host exams, with its lobby area and many practice rooms, and all the candidates praise the space and the availability of rooms to warm up and prepare. The exams are organised and managed by members of Friends of Challoner’s Music, a small group of parents who work to support musical provision at the school. All candidates had the opportunity to perform at an informal tea time concert the week before the exams, and so are able to face the nerve-wracking experience with increased confidence.
