Year 10 Enrichment Visit to Silverstone

Sitting on the coach departing Silverstone - one of the UK’s most famous race circuits - we reflected upon what was a truly spectacular day and a moment to cherish. 180 students from Year 10 got the chance to do this, and we concluded unanimously: the day was incredible.

First, we had the opportunity to view the museum, which was remarkably interactive, with demonstrations of different aspects of Formula 1 cars, from the engine to the pedal mechanics.

Next was the history, which took us back in time to the Second World War when Silverstone was an RAF base and Wellington Bombers landed there. In fact, that’s how the Wellington Straight got its name! After the 4D cinema experience, we had lunch. Sitting by the racetrack was a much-appreciated opportunity to rest after a long morning.

It was then time for our workshop, where we were lucky enough to be educated on the financial and environmental impacts of Formula 1 cars, putting into perspective the scale of the sport. Finally, it was time to visit the circuit. Whilst there were no cars circulating the track, we stood at the Luffield corner imagining Lewis Hamilton performing a victory lap after a close finish.

And just like that, our day had ended. We climbed back on the coach, all more knowledgeable about Silverstone, and realised that the word ‘museum’ could also mean fun.
