Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award is the UK’s leading youth achievement programme, with around 570,000 young people participating in 2024. Since its launch almost 70 years ago, the award has encouraged young people to make a real difference in their communities, as well as improving their personal skills and physical wellbeing.
The DofE programme is open to anyone aged 14 to 24, and offers three levels of award: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. At each level, participants commit to an hour of volunteering, learning a new skill and taking part in physical activity each week over a set number of weeks, depending on the level. All participants also complete an expedition, and those doing Gold take part in a residential trip lasting at least 5 days. These residentials can vary from cooking courses to sports camps to uni taster weeks, and aim to build confidence in new environments and are a great way for participants to meet new people and form friendships.
While working towards their award, students build essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience and communication. These skills are not only useful in day-to-day life, but also make a strong impression on CVs and personal statements. Whether you’re staying on track with your weekly sections or navigating during an expedition, the DofE offers countless opportunities to grow. DofE is also a great way to meet new people and strengthen friendships with others who share similar interests.
Whilst challenging, the experience of participating in the DofE Award, at any level, not only expands a participant’s skill set but also provides the opportunity to create memories and strengthen friendships.
DofE at DCGS continues to grow, with increased participation each year. Around 130 Year 9 students enrol in the Bronze award each year, highlights of the experience being the two day final expedition during May of Year 10. Students who have completed their Bronze awards can then start working towards their Silver award.
Sixth Form students can register for their Gold award, with around 70-90 students enrolling each September. Students in Y13 who have completed their awards are given the opportunity to visit Buckingham Palace to celebrate their achievement with the Duke of Edinburgh himself.
