Only add or subtract fractions that have the same denominator.

An improper fraction has a numerator that is bigger than the denominator, for example \( \frac{39}{4} \).

A mixed fraction has a whole number part and a fraction part, for example \( 4 \frac{1}{3} \).

To add mixed fractions, add the whole number parts and fraction parts separately. When subtracting mixed fractions it is usually best to make them improper first.

When adding or subtracting decimals, line up the digits in columns first.
