This summer two Challoner’s students produced quite extraordinary performances in the Cambridge University STEP Mathematics papers. Both Arlen Liu and Ian Fan achieved the prestigious S grade in both STEP II and STEP III, a double which has never occurred at Challoner’s before. This grade is reserved for the very best performances in a highly elite field of many of the world’s best Year 13 mathematicians.

STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) Mathematics is a renowned mathematics examination designed to test candidates on questions that are similar in style to undergraduate mathematics. The test consists of up to three 3-hour examinations: STEP 1, STEP 2 and STEP 3. Arlen and Ian were required to sit the two harder papers - STEP 2 and STEP 3. To perform at this level requires huge dedication, and both students had prepared very thoroughly for the exams over the preceding six months.

Arlen and Ian will begin their undergraduate courses at Cambridge in October. Arlen is studying Mathematics at Trinity College and Ian is studying Computer Science at Pembroke College. Both of them started at Challoner’s in Year 7 and have always had a superb work ethic, and these performances are a fitting reward for their huge talent, and the fantastic attitude that both students have displayed throughout their time at the school.
