Due to the pandemic, many of us have had far too much free time this year. After chatting with the other members of the Student Journalist Team I realised that we’ve all been watching a lot of films to keep the boredom at bay. I myself have been watching all sorts - things I’ve seen thousands of times before and things I’ve never gotten around to. Being a film fan, I thought it would be a good idea to explore some of these films further.
It’s therefore my pleasure to introduce the new film section to the DCGS website! We’ll be doing reviews, lists, articles and more. It will be updated often, with reviews coming in bi-monthly and everything else coming in as we work on them. We’re trying to ‘go with the flow’ and just let people write about things that interest them. It’s such a shame that the industry as a whole is slowly dying due to the pandemic, and short of donating money to cinemas, there’s nothing we can actually do about it. The goal here then is to try to encourage you, the reader and anyone else to engage in the film industry and support those who work in it - the industry that brings in tens of billions of pounds into our economy yearly, but more importantly, that entertains us.
The actual content of these pieces will be varied too; across years as mentioned, but also across genre and style. Reviews alone will cover Musical, Sci-Fi, Thriller, Drama, Biopic, Comedy and Action. That’s just the ones I’ve confirmed I’ll be writing, as there’ll be much more in the future. What I’m trying to tell you is that if you’re remotely interested in anything in the medium of film, we’ll have something for you - whether you want to get started with particular works or genres, are interested in the history and theory, or just want to see what others think of your favourites (and least favourites for that matter!), then this is the place for you. I like to think that even if you’re not that interested in film, maybe this section could get you interested, or at least broaden your horizons. I truly think that film is the medium for everyone because its contents are so diverse in every way. They’re one of the best ways to learn about the world around us, and they’re also incredibly entertaining. In short, welcome to the film section!
