Return to the main report

The experience of participating in ‘School Report' was something of real significance that will influence our school lives and will remain a vivid memory as an opening into the world of journalism. It worked as a way to enable those who are less confident than others to come out of their shell.

We learnt the importance of deadlines and their unexpected arrivals, teaching us an essential lesson for later life. It taught us the importance of working in a team, journalism and more about the outside world and how it affects us as a school. It was fun experience and we would recommend the workshop for the upcoming students.

It didn't go as smoothly as we thought it would when we signed up. The pressure in front of the cameras, the deadlines and the speed of the process all caused some problems among the supporting cast. Lots of the script writing and editing to make it perfect put lots of pressure onto the participating students. However, all of these were overcome to create a very presentable BBC School Report 2015.

Testimonies

Ross McKenzie

I have taken part in the BBC School Report 2015. For me, and others, the BBC School Report has been a great experience. It has given me the opportunity delve into the world of journalism and work together collaboratively with new people. I have enjoyed working with others to write scripts and going through the recording process. It has been a great way to experience what it could be like if I took a career path towards journalism.

Harry Looney:

I think that this BBC School Report has been a great experience for us all and I have enjoyed every moment. I loved going through the recording process, however many takes it took for us all to get it right! It was great fun and I found it both fun and interesting, with a hint of agitation as we had to have multiple takes. It turns out that is what most videos require, so it's not too bad. If I was asked to do it again, I would.

Rob Sleet:

School report for me has been an amazing experience that we have all enjoyed thoroughly. My favourite part of School Report has been working together as a team to produce something that we are all pleased with. It has given me an insight into to how the newsroom works. The overall atmosphere has been pushed but at the same time has been relaxed and you don't feel pressured.

Lucas Roberts:

The school report was a good experience for me because it gave me an insight in journalism and the hard work behind the scenes that news channels have to face on a daily basis. Also it helped my ability of working in a group as making the report required a huge amount of teamwork with everyone having to do their small part for a big project. I will never look at a news report again knowing the amount of people it takes for a small segment of the 24/7 news. Recording news is very pressured as lines have to be memorised and any small mistake would mean a total retake of the scene.

Adam Jenkins:

I found the school report to be a great and different experience as it was very different to anything that I had done before. It gave me a huge insight as to how all of this works and what journalists do all day. It was very stressful at times but it was definitely a great and it all paid off once we had all of the filming and writing up done. It is something that I would really recommend and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

The experience of the BBC School Report was fantastic. I really enjoyed writing the script and standing in front of the camera for one of the first times in my life. At the start of filming I felt very nervous, but as the filming went on, I felt less and less butterflies. The last day was the highlight; working for a deadline is a key skill I learnt. I have enjoyed the past few weeks and if I could do it again I definitely would.
