CREST is a project-based award scheme for the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It links the personal passions of students to curriculum-based learning. This year, eighteen Year 8 and 9 students are tackling the Silver Award Crest Challenge every Wednesday lunchtime.

They are looking to investigate, ‘what features of a molecule are responsible for flavour?' and in their first session they extracted the molecule limonene from orange peel using distillation. The students will need to demonstrate both creativity and imagination through their investigative work and will develop a range of new practical skills and application of their work to a ‘real work’ context.

They will work on their project over a 30 hour period, completing a log of their achievements and developing their subject knowledge of Organic Chemistry and they will have the support of Year 12 chemists Huzefa Rupawala, Konrad Bartkiewicz and Adam Hyett who are assisting in leading the club. We wish them all good luck in achieving this award.
