Wolfram Alpha

To quote their website:

Making the world’s knowledge computable Wolfram|Alpha introduces a fundamentally new way to get knowledge and answers— not by searching the web, but by doing dynamic computations based on a vast collection of built-in data, algorithms, and methods.

This site is very useful for anything specifically scientific that could be defined within a series of rules or laws.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia has an unfairly harsh reputation. A veritable army of volunteers patrols the site checking the additions to the site, making sure it is largely correct.

Wikipedia compares favourably to the Encyclopedia Brittanica in the case of accuracy within scientific articles. It does not do so well on things that are more subjective or things that are taken from pop culture. Political pages often attract vandalism and need to be carefully checked.
So if you stick to fact based articles it is good.

But far more useful are all the references that the aricles use. At the bottom of each page is a bibliography of the sources used. This is an excellent way of finding major sources for your exploration. This list will expand your potential sources enormously and quickly, with each new source giving you yet more to try.
